Becoming Certified

In order to become a Certified Family Law Specialist, an attorney must demonstrate that they have been substantially involved in the practice of family law in the five years prior to submitting their application. This can be done by meeting four out of five of the following qualifications:

  • Acted as principal counsel in twenty or more contested family law hearings involving dissolution of marriage (divorce), custody, child support, modification, spousal support, division of property, restraining orders/domestic violence proceedings, taxation issues, contempt and/or enforcement proceedings.
  • Acted as principal counsel in five or more hearings or trials under the California Family Code. All of these hearings must have been at least three or more hours in length and involve the testimony of witnesses.
  • Acted as principal counsel in a minimum of thirty negotiated family law judgments or negotiated marital settlement agreements
  • Acted as principal counsel in thirty or more stipulated temporary family law orders
  • Acted as principal counsel and principal author of briefs in three California family law appeals in which an opinion was filed

In addition to meeting these qualifications and submitting a formal application, a lawyer must also pass an extensive written exam on all areas of family law which is only offered every two years by the State Bar of California.

I believe my certification is an asset to all of my clients and serves as a testament to the fact that I have been dedicated to the practice of family law for many years. I have been recognized by the State Bar of California for my level of expertise and experience.
